Our Chapters

Our chapters are branches of our organization that bring our mission to their unique communities. Specifically, each chapter is created with the goal of improving the prehospital care landscape through evidence-based practices and bystander education. Our chapters hold EMS-oriented journal clubs and conduct free trainings on their campuses and in their local communities, while building a community of students who are passionate about this mission.

Rutgers University – New Brunswick in NJ

Our Rutgers University chapter was started by the founders of MedicZero Inc., in 2020. This chapter brings together 40+ students who attend weekly journal clubs, guest presentations, and hands-on activities. This year, trainers from MedicZero Rutgers taught Hands-Only CPR to 273 bystanders on “Rutgers Day” alone (pictured)! In addition, they have taught 600+ students stroke recognition during lectures. For their work, they received the “Chancellor Provost’s Outstanding Service Award” in 2021.

Temple University in PA

In just one year, our Temple University chapter has assembled a team of trainers and began hosting trainings at local community events and public places in Philadelphia, PA. Recently, they trained over 60 bystanders in hands-only CPR at the Upper Merion Earth Day Festival (pictured)

Villanova University in PA

Our MedicZero Villanova chapter was approved early 2023. They primarily host journal club meetings about topics within EMS using evidence-based medicine to 20-25 active members. Topics they have had open forum discussions about relate to EMS systems around the world, nonurgent ED patients, and bleeding control techniques. The organization is looking to start training initiatives on their campus for the upcoming year.

Seton Hall University in NJ

Our MedicZero SHU chapter has been running since the Fall of 2021. Throughout the last few years, SHU’s best journal club/training event has been their bleeding control training, where members engaged in bleeding control mechanisms using tourniquets, packing, etc. They also have hosted their first bi-annual fundraiser where university students were able to learn more about emergency medicine while playing for prizes. Aside from their journal club meetings, MedicZero SHU also hosts community trainings at and around campus, engaging their community in life-saving skills.

University of Connecticut in CT

Our MedicZero UConn chapter was approved in the Fall of 2023. The E-Board has worked towards setting up journal club meetings and promoting EMS practices within their community. They have also begun conducting stroke presentations in classrooms alongside tablings at various locations across campus. For the upcoming year, this chapter hopes to begin trainings within the Connecticut region.

New Jersey Institute of Technology in NJ

Our MedicZero NJIT chapter was approved in the Spring of 2024. This new chapter is to begin chapter promotion for the upcoming year. E-Board members who are trainers teach life-saving skills within the NJMS training affiliate.

We currently have chapters established at several institutions, including Rutgers University, Temple University, Seton Hall University, University of Connecticut, Villanova, and NJIT, with more on the way. We are eager to expand our presence by recruiting students at new universities to create student-run MedicZero chapters. This opportunity would be particularly valuable to pre-med, pre-health, biological sciences, and students interested in EMS/Emergency Medicine.

Evidence-Based Medicine

What are Evidence-Based Journal Club Meetings?

One of the key initiatives that help us drive our MedicZero chapters forward is by hosting evidence-based journal club meetings. Evidence-based medicine entails adopting new and up-to-date research and medical practices to break the dogma within medicine. This is to ensure healthcare is practiced in an innovative and iterative manner. Our journal club structure helps students deviate from 80 minute lecture-based classroom settings and adopts a new method: a short presentation, a long activity to strengthen learning, and guided discussions that engage all voices. Introducing evidence-based medicine to the journal club format stimulates the literature reviews conducted in higher education and medical institutions, better preparing students for their future endeavors.

MedicZero Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to transforming bystander emergency and prehospital care. Our mission is to revolutionize emergency care implementation across the United States through education, starting with the creation of affiliated chapters to improve first-aid knowledge and bystander literacy.

One of the key initiatives that helps us accomplish our mission is hosting evidence-based journal club meetings. These sessions provide our chapter members with in-depth reviews of various medical topics, simulating the literature reviews conducted in medical institutions. Additionally, we offer community training programs. Our curriculum, developed to teach various First Aid topics including Hands-Only CPR and Stroke Recognition, has reached over 7,000 bystanders across the country, all free of charge.
